Almost 1000 people have been killed and several thousands left helpless without electricity in northeast China due to floods. This flooding is believed to be China’s worst in the past 10 years. Since the arrival of the rains this year, the death toll is now 968 with about 507 people gone missing, announced the state-run flood control office.
The weather forecast revealed that through Thursday, heavy rains were anticipated in several northeastern and southern parts of the nation. On Wednesday, torrential rains causing floods stranded and trapped almost 30000 persons residing in the Chinese town of Kouqian in the northeastern province of Jilin. Floods occurred after the nearby Xingshan Reservoir and the Wende and Songhua rivers overflowed due to the torrential rains. The rescue mission was soon successfully started and people were evacuated to a safer destination.
The unusually heavy rains, 15% more than the previous year, in this year have made the situation in China tense despite floods occurring every year. According to news agency Xinhua, about 875,000 homes have collapsed until now and almost 10 million people have been rescued and taken to higher grounds this time.
